Let’s Protect Deep Pond

Deep Pond, located in the Hatchville neighborhood of East Falmouth, Massachusetts, is a natural kettle hole pond, formed when blocks of glacial ice, buried during the Ice Age 15,000 years ago, melted. It is also a coastal plain pond, which means that it supports rare plant species not found in other bodies of water and is especially vulnerable to threats such as exotic invasive species, herbicides, septic overflow, and recreational overuse.

We all love Deep Pond, but 2020 marked a change. Excessive and more frequent algae blooms became obvious, and testing for cyanobacteria showed that at different times the water was not safe to swim for humans or pets.

Deep Pond Preservation Project, founded in September 2020, is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that seeks to retain the pond’s health, beauty, and value. We welcome your support, engagement, and questions.
